21 facts for 21 years….

Happy Birthday to us!! Ah yes, The Music Place may look fresh faced but it’s no spring chicken (music schools age in dog years) and this Friday we turned 21! As we welcome in our 22nd year, we’ve been reflecting on our years around the block- the things we’ve accomplished and the changes which have taken us from strength to strength! You may think you know The Music Place, but the old gal still has some surprises up her sleeve. Here are 21 things you might not know about The Music Place…

21 facts about the Music Place

1. The Music Place was set up by Lucy in 1997 when she was 23 years old.
2. Staff member Neil Fairclough now plays with the band Queen!
3. The building used to be the bank manager’s flat and County Galleries below was a bank.
4. The only teaching staff member who has been here for the full 21 years is Jonni. Alison and Darren have been here 20 years though!
5. Staff members have played with the following stars: Joni Mitchel, Sting, Johnny Marr, Robbie Williams, Lily Allen, Jamelia, Bryan Ferry.
6. We think about 370,000 lessons have taken place at the Music Place since it started!
7. The Music Place was nearly called ‘The Altrincham School of Music and Performance’
8. We once had to close the school for three days because of snow.
9. The building was built in 1906
10. Our youngest student is 4 years old
11. Our oldest student is 84 years old
12. We have had over 2000 exam passes since we opened!
13. When we first opened we had to write out all song lyrics by hand, listening to the CD over and over before the internet did it for us!
14. We currently have four generations from the Gracie family coming for lessons here!
15. We estimate that over 7,000 students have had lessons here.
16. When we first opened we did a class for Spice Girl lovers!
17. There are 39 steps from the bottom of the steps to the top of the stairs!
18. The longest attending student has been coming for twenty years!
19. We teach 19 different instruments
20. One of our students now plays with Will Young
21. One of our pupils got to the live shows on X Factor
